MAVIS IS GOING GREAT

Hey everyone, I just wanted to post a short note saying Mavis' latest blood test came back NORMAL. I still need to interrogate the vet further but he said she is doing great, and her test result numbers are great. He was a little suprised at the results himself I think. I will post more after I talk to him. This is great news for Mavis - maybe more folks will be interested in adopting her now?

peace,

Mavis Monroe.....

Sorry I haven't updated Mavis' blog in awhile, school started again and that coupled with work has left me brain dead and exhausted. Mavis is doing great. She is such a happy go lucky gal. Her friend Porsche was adopted by a great family - YAY! I miss seeing her face at adoptions and having her lay in my lap, but I know she is much happier living with a real family and cuddling up the couch to watch TV. Now it's Mavis' turn don't y'all think? I know some of you are reluctant to take on a dog with potential medical issues, but aren't those the dogs that need loving and compassionate homes the most? The cute little puppies will get adopted, they always do (Mavis' puppies were adopted within a week of being available) yet Mavis is still waiting ONE YEAR and THREE MONTHS later! I am saddened by the dismissal of Mavis as a potential pet when people find out she may have a kidney issue. This poor girl has been waiting so long, is so healthy and just wants someone to love her as much as she loves them. She doesn't know that she may get sick in the future, heck - WE don't know that she'll EVER get sick - yet people pass her by and ask about the "healthy" dogs. I tell ya, if I had room for all the old, sick, three-legged, blind and deaf dogs jut wallowing away watiing for someone to see their true potential - I WOULD TAKE THEM ALL! Anyway, I digress. Mavis is good, she is full of life and love and in my heart i KNOW someone just perfect will reach out to her and pull her in for a hug and never let her go.

She goes in for a repeat blood test tomorrow and I'll post her results. Keep your paws crossed.

Here's a picture of Mavis at adoptions last weekend, looking very Marilyn Monroe..... hence today's post title....

Mavis takes Manhattan (Beach that is)

Mavis went on an adventure of sorts this last Saturday. A friend of Mavis' came across a store in Manhattan Beach that sports a beautiful pitbull. Always on the lookout for a home for Mavis, the woman rushed into the store and chatted up the owner. Arrangements were made to bring Mavis for a visit and so off we went. Mavis had a great time in Manhattan Beach, she walked along the path and did a little shopping. I am so very proud of her since this was probably her first foray into that world. Coming out of the South LA shelter and heading into kennel care downtown doesn't leave a lot of beach time for a girl like Mavis.

The visit went great and the store owner is now another link in our great chain out there trying to find Mavis a home.

The New Year Update

Happy New Year Everyone!
I just wanted to check in with some Mavis and Porsche news. First, Porsche is back at the kennel. While this makes Mavis happy, I admit I am saddened by her return to the kennel. Let me just say it was not because Porsche was unruly or for anything negative. In fact, the foster family was getting TOO ATTACHED to her! The family really wants to foster a dog, but isn't in a place to adopt right now - they felt they and the kids were getting too attached to Porsche - so decided to take her back to the kennel. Porsche is a doll - I think she was a little depressed at last Saturday's adoptions - she missed her new family. It was sad, but we showered her with attention and she hung out with Mavis, and she seemed to perk up a little bit as the day wore on.

In Mavis news - there really isn't any. She hasn't had anyone interested in her and so far only one kind soul has offered to help with some of her mounting expenses. Medically, the radiologist read her Xrays today and found nothing abnormal in them (she had chest and abdominal xrays done to rule out anything organ wise causing her urine protein to rise.) So, she is healthy, just sitting and waiting for someone to find and fall in love with her.

I made flyers of her that I will post around town this weekend, if you want a copy just email me and I'll send it to you. I guess I figure if enough people are out there looking for the perfect home for Mavis, it will happen.

In other news, I am personally saddened by the passing of my cat C-J (you can see her in the photo of the Bully Crew at the bottom of the page. She was 20 years old and my first rescue. Who would have thought that 20 years ago this wily little kitten hiding under a car in a parking lot at my work would start me on my road to rescue. She was a tough one, always in charge of the household no matter how many puppies and pitbulls I brought home. I miss her terribly but am comforted by the fact that I was with her in the end and that she was able to spend her last few hours in her favortite spot - laying in the sun on the deck. Here's to you C-J - may you be healthy and eating til your hearts content.

peace,

tina

Mavis on Christmas morning

The kennel where Mavis is boarded was so sweet to send me this Christmas morning picture of Mavis. How great are they there to give all the rescue dogs a special treat and attention on Christmas.

Mavis is still looking for her forever home or foster home. Medically, she is doing great. I will take her in for a repeat blood test soon, but she is really healthy, her blood pressure test came back normal and her xrays did too.

I just can't believe no one wants her. She is such a spectacular dog. Maybe 2007 will be her year.....

Mavis and Porsche Update

Hi all, I see Mavis has been here telling her own story - what a smartypants that one is....

Anyway - just wanted to update y'all on Mavis and Porsche - the good news is that Porsche found a foster home (at least a short term one) so she is spending the holidays in a nice warm home with a loving foster family - Go Porsche! She'll still be at adoptions on saturdays so PLEASE come see her.

The bad news is that mavis is still at the kennel and when her best friend Porsche left - she got so depressed the staff moved her to closer to the kitchen so they could keep an eye on her and she could see them. They have been great with her - even cuddling up in her run with her so she doesn't feel so lonely.

The other bad news is that the vet found protein in Mavis' urine and through blood tests thinks she might have a slight kidney issue - though she is completely asympomatic and even the vet said IF she DOES have a kidney issue - she is THE HEALTHIEST kidney issue dog he's ever seen. I guess the cause of the protein is hard to identify and may NEVER cause her any problems, but I want to be completely honest and up front with folks who might be interested in her. She'll be going back to the vet this week for some more tests to rule out anything serious. I'll keep you all posted.

So, there it is - think positive thoughts for Mavis this week and let's hope that someone comes to adoptions tomorrow and falls head over heels in love with her!

One last note - if you or anyone you know are interested in helping cover some of Mavis' expenses, please let me know. I hate putting this out there but i really have no choice at this point. You can contribute directly to me, to the kennel she's boarded at or to The Paw'd Squad Animal Rescue in Mavis' name.

Thanks for reading and giving Mavis a chance,

Tina
