ADOPT OR FOSTER MAVIS

I rescued mavis last November (yes - a whole year ago!) from the South LA shelter. She was pregnant, had kennel cough and was scheduled to be euthanized that day. She was listed as a stray but was obviously someone's pet once upon a time. How she ended up pregnant and a stray I will never know. What I do know though is that she looked at me with the saddest eyes imaginable, and when I asked to see her out of her run, she leaned her big pregnant self into me and that was it - I bailed her out of there and took her to my vet. After an x-ray that showed 5 puppies in her belly I left her at the vet for the night wondering what the hell I got myself into rescuing a pregnant staffie mix with no where to house her. Fate was on Mavis' side though and a wonderful foster home welcomed her in and let her have her puppies at their house. The day after Thanksgiving 2005 Mavis delivered 5 beautiful, healthy girls (yup - all girls) Well, the puppies had their first birthday on Saturday, November 25, 2006. They are all in loving, happy homes, but Mavis is still homeless. Her foster home did a great job with her for 9 months but now Mavis is being boarded in a kennel. There are moments when I wonder if I did the right thing for Mavis that day last November as she still doesn't have the love and warmth of a family to call her own, but when I see her smiling face at adoptions, and feel the love she has for me and all the volunteers that she knows, I can't help but believe that she really does know love now - maybe for the first time in her life.

Mavis is a special girl, who needs a special home and/or a foster home. She doesn't show well at adoptions because she is not the dog that wiggles up to the front of the crate to get your attention. She is shy at the start, but give her a minute and you'll find her loyalty and love are endless. She wants nothing more than to be the center of your attention, she'll roll over on her back for some belly rubs or climb in your lap for some hugs and kisses. She'd love to curl up on the couch with you and watch movies, or take a stroll around the block to check out the sights. She is about 2 1/2 -3 years old, spayed, microchipped and up to date on her vaccinations. She's housebroken and knows basic command. She is good with kids (she lived with several in her foster home) and while she is good with most dogs, she prefers bigger dogs to smaller.

Please help me find Mavis the home she deserves. She is such a special soul that has lived through so much. She beat the odds at the South LA shelter - no small feat for a pregnant, brindle staffie with a medical card, don't let her live in a kennel any longer.
